Farmer Stories: Karr Springs Family

The Karr Springs family have been farming for 52 years—all of their married life. This is their story.

It’s tough to see what people pay at the supermarket for fresh food and groceries compared to what farmers get at market—and there’s no clear explanation for this. Over the last year, sale prices were nowhere near enough to cover even the fuel and transportation costs, let alone keep us going.

In general, all costs have gone up but commodity prices have gone down steadily every week—from $2,000 per calf 12-months ago to $300 today. 23 years ago, when we first moved into cattle, we aimed for $500 per calf, so given the increase in costs, times are certainly tough for a lot of farmers.

We even had better prices in the last drought than we have in this dry-spell, so I don’t think the drought forecasts are what has impacted market confidence.

I’m concerned about farming in the future because young farmers can’t borrow to buy land because of land prices, interest rates and commodity prices. The essence of Aussie farming will change as farming families are phased out because the only people who can buy farms are large enterprises. It feels like the government prioritises foreign investors over hardworking Aussie farming families.

We love farming, it’s in our heart and soul—otherwise we wouldn’t do it. But it feels like farmers are easily forgotten because we’re such a small group of people compared to other industries and groups.

Whether it’s drought or floods, we’re working to feed people, and I wonder if people or the government realise and appreciate this. When Aussie Helpers sent us a Christmas hamper to help us in the past, it made us feel like we were somebody—that people knew what we were going through and cared.

Helping Aussie farming families this Christmas

Like millions of Aussies right now, many farmers are struggling. And, as hotter and drier conditions return, we’re anticipating more farmers will need our help than ever before.

It’s a tragic irony that farmers work from sun-up to sunset to feed our families—and yet many will struggle to afford a Christmas lunch and gifts for their loved ones.

There are many ways to helps us to help Aussie farming families in need this Christmas, including donating funds, donating goods, volunteering, fundraising and partnering.
